Soda Bottle Bird Feeder

In honor of celebrating Mother Earth the kiddos and I made a little something for our feathery friends.

Materials to make your re-purposed bird feeder:

one clean empty two liter plastic soda bottle with cap
one 2" long wood screw
2 wire twist ties
a wood skewer or found wooden stick(must be straight enough to use for a perch)

Tools needed:

electric drill
titanium drill bits ( I used sizes 3/16 for the cap & 7/64 for the perch)
scissors
screw driver
needle nose pliers

To make the bird feeder start by removing the label from the 2 liter bottle, drill a hole in the side of the bottle about 2/3 of the way down, this will help you to get your scissors in the bottle to start cutting. I made one side a bit long to shield the birdseed from any rain.

Once the bottle is cut, take your 3/16 drill bit and drill a hole in the cap then find your spot on a tree to place the bird feeder and simply screw the cap onto the tree. If you opt out of the next step to make a perch, just twist the bottle onto the cap and fill with birdseed and your bird feeder in finished. If you would like a perch continue on with the DIY project.

Since we wanted a perch for our bird feeder there were a few more steps before we were finished. Drill 2 sets of holes in the bottom of what will be the bottom of your feeder using the 7/64 drill bit, these will be where you secure the perch with the twist ties. Insert the ties through the holes then take your stick or skewer and secure it onto the feeder with the twist ties. Using the pliers twist ties tight and clip the perch to size if needed. Now you will need to screw your bottle on to the cap, then fill with birdseed, your recycled, re-purposed Earth friendly bird feeder project is complete!

Don'y worry if you don't have any birdseed on hand so I found some info online and we made our own out of leftover peanuts we caught during Mardi Gras, cornmeal the kiddos made by hand at Heritage Days and raw oats.
